Dragobete is the day of love in Romania. It’s not as famous as Valentine’s Day, but it’s our Romanian one. Here is the legend of Dragobete, the symbol of Romanian love.
The legend of Dragobete
Legend has it that Dragobete was the son of Baba Dochia, a particularly beautiful young woman in her time. The legend says that Dochia fell asleep in a meadow, and the Spirit of the Mountain turned into mist and left her pregnant. After 9 months, Dragobete would have been born.
At birth, he had 4 cubs:
- The Spring that gave him love, the freshness of flowers and youth without old age.
- The Summer that gave him the sweetness of fruit and the warmth of love.
Autumn who offered him a whistle to cheer the people with his songs, and the fourth bear,
Winter gave him a white garment with sparkles of diamonds.
Dragobete came to be loved and loved by both women and men. It seems that all the gifts he received at birth helped him seduce all the young women who came his way, which is why he became the symbol of love. However, one day, when he was already a young virgin, he met a sage who took him to the mountains and taught him everything about plants and animals.
In addition, on the night of February 23 to 24, he appeared in the boys dreams and taught them the secrets of love. After hundreds of years in which Dragobete would have taught people to love, he died and was transformed into a plant called “Năvalnic”, which appears in the clearings in early spring.
To love, to be loved. Have a nice weekend everyone.
